Abstract:
Based on the traditional spherical discrete element method (DEM), a kind of bonding type discrete element model (BTDEM) was established, and applied to the simulation of the breakage and collapse of masonry structures. The breakage and collapse of a kind of typical masonry structure was simulated by BTDEM in this paper, and the simulation results show that the details of the collapse of the masonry structure, even the breakage of building blocks, all can be predicted by the new method. The simulation case shows that the BTDEM is a kind of high efficient numerical method for simulating masonry structures. The BTDEM has the advantages of higher computational efficiency and easy computing on large scales, and the method can be expanded to be used in the simulation and analysis of the breakage and collapse of masonry-infilled frame structures. The application of the method on the dynamic cataclysm of buildings will help to the study of disaster prevention and disaster mitigation of civil constructions.
