Abstract:
Corrosion defects would reduce the ultimate flexural capacity of pipes. Considering anisotropy of pipe strength, general solutions to ultimate flexural capacity of pipeline with arbitrary shape corrosion defects subject to combined internal pressure, axial force and bending moment are proposed. Furthermore, closed-form analytical solutions are derived for pipes with elliptical and parabolic shaped corrosion defects. Two numerical examples show that the results from closed-form solutions are in agreement with those from general solutions. Corrosion shapes have significant effect on ultimate flexural capacity of corroded pipe. The ultimate capacity of corroded pipeline would be underestimated if actual corrosion shape be simplified as constant-depth shape.
