Abstract:
A series of experiments on regular waves blocked by opposing currents are presented in this paper. The data prove that longer waves require stronger blocking currents. It is observed that amplitude dispersion plays a critical role in wave blocking and can not be ignored. A frequency downshift due to the sideband instability is observed with increasing amplitude, which greatly affects the transformation of waves and prevents wave blocking.
