Abstract:
A nonlinear finite element model was developed, based on the elasto-plastic finite element theory,to analyze the load vs deformation relation of the steel beam to concrete-filled steel tubular column connection. The beam-column element is analyzed using approximate updated Lagrangian formulation to obtain the stiffness matrix,in which material and geometric nonlinearities are considered.Accordingly,a program for the nonlinear finite element analysis of concretefilled steel tubular connection was obtained. The model was used to analyze the experiments on the steel beam to concrete-filled steel tubular column connections conducted by related researchers and authors herein. It was shown from the comparisons between the calculated and tested results that the model has good applicability and precision. On the base of the verification by the tested results, the nonlinear load vs deformation relation characteristics of the typical connection was studied, and the influences on the load and load vs deformation skeleton curves of the essential parameters were discussed. The work in this paper provides a basis for further theoretical research on the behaviors of the concrete-filled steel tubular frames.
