Abstract:
During recent years it was found that slippage on a solid-liquid interface could give rise to a considerable friction drag reduction, but it could also cause a dramatic reduction of the hydrodynamic response. This paper presents a concept that the bearing surface of a journal sliding bearing consists of composite slip surfaces with different surface adhesion and slip properties. It was found that such a bearing exhibits many unusual advantages over the traditional bearings. Many properties, such as friction coefficient, load support capacity, lubricant flow, load support angle, etc, can be changed and optimized by changing the slippage property of the bearing surface.Numerical solutions showed that optimization of the slippage property of bearing surface in the high-pressure region could enhance greatly the performance of the journal bearing. For example, the primary optimization design in the present paper shows that the surface friction coefficient is reduced by about 50%,the load support capacity is increased by about 20%,and load support angle is reduced by 33% compared with a no-slippage traditional journal bearing. The present concept can be used not only to design a more outstanding journal bearing but also to design a thrust bearing or a slider bearing with an outstanding performance. There is a large space to explore in the area to reduce friction and increase the load support capacity of a sliding bearing with composite surfaces.
