Abstract:
Reliability-based design is one of the alternative techniques for design under uncertainty. Most of the reliability approaches employ probabilistic methods which require large amount of information to accurately define the detailed description of uncertain parameters.By contrast, the convex model theory requires only the various bounds of parameters. This theory is gaining wide attention for cases where lack of information makes the implementation of the probabilistic approaches more difficult. In this paper, the non-probabilistic reliability problem of structures with uncertain parameters bounded by convex models especially ellipsoidal models is investigated.A non-probabilistic reliability index, which can be used as a measure of safety of structures with both ellipsoidal models and interval parameters,is proposed. The feasibility of the proposed theory is proved and explained in detail. The comparison of the non-probabilistic reliability index and the failure frequency calculated by Monte Carlo method is presented by a simple example.
