Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether the collaborative optimization (CO) can be applied to the integrated aerodynamic/structural design of a wing. Two kinds of collaborative optimizations, the basic collaborative optimization and the response surface based collaborative optimization, are formulated and discussed. The design of the wing of a light airplane is used as a test problem. The key issue of the investigation is how to formulate the integrated aerodynamic/structural design of the wing as multidisciplinary design optimization using the collaborative optimization. The numerical results indicate that the basic collaborative optimization cannot be successfully applied to the integrated aerodynamic/structural design of a wing, while the response surface based collaborative optimization solve the design problem successfully and robustly.
