Abstract: |
The study on earthquake-resistance of high arch dams has always been important research. The paper analyzed the seismic resistance of XIAOWAN arch dam in which the effect of contraction joints to high arch dam were considered. Some nonlinear finite element procedures for high arch dam with consideration of the gradual opening and closing of contraction joints have been developed. Among them the substructure procedure with three-dimensional nonlinear joint element is a more efficient and effective analysis tool for performing additional studies on high arch dam response. In this paper, the property and feasibility of a new design idea about setting damper in the joints of arch dam as an anti-seismic measure of high arch dam in practice is discussed from engineering point of view. A numerical model which simulates the dampers is set and demonstrated. The effects of different water height, contact and sliding of joints and the dam-water interaction to earthquake response of high arch dam are discussed. The effect of the dampers on the seismic-resistance of arch dam is calculated and explored. |
