Abstract:
Multiple Tuned Mass Dampers (MTMD) consists of many tuned mass dampers with an uniform distribution of natural frequencies. Five types of MTMD (i.e. MTMD1~MTMD5) are formed in light of the combinations available of the system parameters. Based on the acceleration transfer function of the structure with general MTMD under the ground acceleration, the unified expression for the Acceleration Dynamic Magnification Factor (ADMF) is derived for MTMD1~MTMD5. Utilizing a numerical searching technique, a study is performed to investigate the optimum parameters, which include the optimum frequency spacing, optimum damping ratio, optimum tuned frequency ratio. It is from the comparison demonstrated that it is preferable to select the MTMD1 when an MTMD is considered in the mitigation of the acceleration response of structures under earthquake.
