By applying the basic principles of the finite element methods, a finite element of plane non-uniform beam is proposed in this paper. The improved element gives exact results for analyzing the non-uniform rectangular beams with both linear and parabolic variation heights of the transverse section. A non-uniform cantilever beam is presented as an example, which shows that the present element simplifies the analysis of non-uniform beams distinctly.
