A mixed variational principle with consideration of both the total potential energy of the structure and the electric complementary energy of the piezoelectric patches has been de- duced.The finith element equations for the laminate shell containing distributed voltage- driven piezoelectric patches have been directly obtained. Numerical examples of plates and shell have been presented to illustrate the efficacy of the algorithm.
