Abstract:
Finite element approach was used to model the damage progression in laminated composites containingan open hole subjected to in-plane loading. In the damage constitutive relations of a composite lamina with ma-trix cracking, nonsymmetrical constraint effects of neighbouring plies was considered. The crack density as afunction of the stress of damage zone was constructed. The generalization of the damage constitutive relationswas made for any off-axis laminate by rotating coordinate in twice. Numerical calculations were done andwere compared with experimental data.Based on the finite element analysis, the types and extent of damage inthe plate as a function of applied load can be obtained. The stiffness degradation of damaged lamina, the pro-gression of damage and the ultimate strength of the plate can be predicted.
